Epigenetics is the study of how our鈥痓ehaviours鈥痑nd environment can鈥痶rigger鈥痗hanges that affect the way our genes work.鈥疷nlike genetic changes, epigenetic changes are鈥痳eversible鈥痑nd do not change our鈥疍NA鈥痵equence, they can change how our body reads a DNA sequence.鈥
One example of鈥痚pigenetics鈥痗hanges鈥痠s鈥痶he addition of a methyl group, or a “chemical cap,” to part of the DNA molecule, which prevents certain genes from being expressed. At least a half of all鈥痶umour鈥痵uppressor genes are inactivated through epigenetic mechanisms in tumorigenesis.鈥
Germs can change our epigenetics to weaken our immune system. This helps the germ survive.鈥
Some of the strongest evidence shows progressive increase in DNA methylation in aging tissues, atherosclerotic blood vessels鈥痑nd other鈥痠nternal organs.鈥
60 years after the Dutch Hunger Winter Famine (1944-1945), researchers looked at methylation levels in people whose mothers were pregnant with them during the famine. Differences in methylation could explain why these people had an increased likelihood for heart disease, schizophrenia, and type 2 diabetes later in life.鈥
Lowered cortisol and dysfunctional response to stressors in children born to mothers who experienced鈥疨TSD鈥痯ost the twin tower incident鈥痠s well鈥痙ocumented.鈥
Epigenetics can be used to detect the type of cancer a person has or can help to find hard to detect cancers earlier.eg鈥痓reast cancer.鈥
鈥
鈥
Lifestyle鈥痜actors鈥痗an trigger these epigenetic changes.鈥
Some epigenetic changes are not permanent, they can be added or removed in response to changes in behaviour or environment.-eg by smoking.鈥
Studies are being undertaken to unravel the interactions鈥痮f Lifestyle鈥痜actors, the鈥痚nvironment, cancer, and鈥痺ays鈥痶o therapeutically reverse methylation linked with cancer鈥痺hich鈥痗ould鈥痩ead鈥痶o personalised medicine such as鈥痚pigenetic diet.鈥
The foods we consume can turn on or off certain genetic markers which play鈥痑 key role鈥痠n鈥痮ur health outcomes.鈥
Garlic helps to prevent cancer as鈥痠t can鈥痚nhance genetic repair, slow down cell proliferation, and prevent the formation of carcinogenic substances in the body.鈥
When an individual consumes health foods like ginger, these epigenetic tags attached to histone proteins around which the DNA is wrapped can be adjusted, influencing the expression of genes linked to inflammatory and neuroprotective pathways.鈥
Superfood Blueberries are high in their nutrient content 鈥 including fibre, vitamin C and K, and鈥痬anganese. Berries鈥痚pigenetically reduce鈥痶he鈥疍NA damage, thereby protecting humans against aging and cancer.鈥
While most natural dietary products have shown beneficial effects on the epigenome, some dietary components (i.e. alcohol) are associated with harmful epigenetic鈥痬odifications.鈥
Put simply, what鈥痺e鈥痚at鈥痺ill not鈥痗hange鈥痶he sequence鈥痮f our DNA, but鈥痮ur鈥痙iet has a鈥痵ignificant鈥痚ffect on how鈥痺e “express鈥濃痮ur DNA.
鈥
Another important lifestyle intervention鈥痭amely Exercise鈥痟as the ability to鈥痠nduce epigenetic changes鈥痳elated to鈥痠nflammation鈥痯athways,鈥痶ype 2 diabetes,鈥痺eight gain,鈥痗ardiovascular鈥痙isease鈥痑nd鈥痩ipid鈥痬anagement.鈥
Intense and prolonged exercise can induce inflammation,鈥痺hereas鈥痩ow鈥痶o鈥痬oderate endurance exercise can鈥痠mprove the鈥痠nflammatory鈥痯rofiles.鈥
More research is鈥痳equired鈥痶o鈥痠dentify鈥痚pigenetic biomarkers鈥痺hich would help鈥痯rescribe鈥痑 personalised exercise plan in terms鈥痮f the鈥痶ype,鈥痙uration, intensity鈥痮f exercise鈥痺hich would be beneficial for鈥痑n individual who could be鈥痑鈥痟ighly trained鈥痑thlete鈥痮r a鈥痬oderately active鈥痟ealthy鈥痯erson or鈥痵omeone鈥赌痺ith鈥痗hronic diseases.鈥
The impact of stress, sleep, positive psychology, emotional connectedness on epigenetic mechanisms would be an exciting鈥痜ield.鈥
鈥
Future: Personalised鈥痬edicine鈥疧R鈥 Epigenetic鈥痙iscrimination.鈥赌
A better understanding of which鈥痚lements within our environment and how they affect epigenetic modifications is long overdue.鈥
Personalized medicine is鈥痶he future鈥痑s science鈥痠dentifies鈥痶he varying effects of different substances on an individual鈥檚 health. Not only is there a need for further research on how our environment and lifestyle choices like diet -鈥痠mpacts鈥痚pigenetic markers on human DNA, but how the outcomes will differ depending on a person鈥檚 body.鈥
Although the exact mechanism鈥痮f鈥痶ransgenerational鈥痚pigenetic inheritance鈥痟as鈥痽et to be鈥痷nderstood, epigenetic鈥痳esearch offers fascinating insight into the possibilities and can help guide us to make better decisions for ourselves and our future children.鈥
